“I attended the special council meeting today called to address the red light cameras; unfortunately, it appeared to be all for show. Council member Sue Lovell tagged the item, and now Houstonians must wait until Wednesday (August 24, 2011) to see if council will vote to terminate use of the cameras. Over the weekend American Traffic Solutions and the City of Houston will undergo mediation to try to reach an agreement. ATS insists the city will pay $25 million, but that amount should at minimum be determined by two adversaries, not 2 proponents of the cameras.”

“The City of Houston needs to get out of crime lab testing. The Houston Police Department crime lab has been problematic since the early 1980’s. The idea of continuing crime lab testing or building a new lab is irresponsible. The lab director Irma Rios has been negligent in developing a plan to have the rape kits tested or even manage the lab itself. Ms. Rios was terminated from DPS for similar issues and it is time for the lab to have new direction. Rape kits need to be tested to help bring closure to the victims; not to mention, the potentially innocent people that may be sitting in prison. Mayor Parker, the crime lab calamity has gone on long enough. It is time to conclude this troubled history.”

“Turning the red light cameras on is yet another controversial action by the Mayor.  Since Parker has been in office, Houstonians have experienced a number of controversies such as the Drainage Tax Debacle, Forced Historical Preservation, the Heights Walmart (380 agreement), and now in spite of knowing the will of the people, she’s turning the cameras back on.  I will listen to the people and bring sensible management to our city.”

Imagine a leader who cares about our city’s safety, economic growth and fiscal well being. Imagine an administration that is ‘proactive’ and informed instead of operating in financial panic mode. This is not merely a distant, far-off dream. With the strong leadership of Fernando Herrera, who is officially running for the office of Houston Mayor, it can become a reality now!

Houston should never have to consider laying off police officers, fire fighters and other city employees in order to balance the budget. Nor should the burden be placed on the taxpayers, homeowners and businesses with tax increases, fees, or costly regulations, not to mention burdening our churches and schools with unrestricted taxation.

Fernando Herrera’s plan to get us back on track financially would not involve such tactics as furloughs, layoffs and cuts in services that compromise our public safety. His 30 years of experience in the field of emergency services has equipped him for public safety preparedness, prevention and consequence management.

Under the leadership of Herrera, the city’s administration will be impartial, creative and responsive. They will listen to suggestions made by those who know first-hand what the problems are and what needs to be done, whether they be city employees or residents. They will listen to what private industry, both large and small, has to say and make certain that Houston’s government is a strong advocate for local business.

Mr. Herrera is asking for your vote, so that he can demonstrate government efficiency when it is operated as a business not like a political piñata. He tells us, “Houston is home to me and my family. I’m ready to get to work to make Houston safe, prosperous, and on budget. Thank you for considering me as Mayor of this great city.”
